What is a good area to live in Salem, OR - For a family with school-age children?

We have an opportunity to move to Salem, Or from San Jose, CA and would like to know what are the nice areas to raise a family. Our children are in Elementary school, but we would like to find a place that has good schools throughout high-school. Also, want a safe and quiet area. Overall how would you describe Salem, OR. San Jose, Ca is great, but it has become so overcrowded and traffic is insane. I am so tired of the rat race!! Looking for a nicer slower paced area to raise our children and build our lives together. Cost of living isn't bad in SJ, Ca because we were abel to get into a house before prices skyrocketed, but now we are stuck in the area and in the small home - Any guidance is greatly appreciated!
